ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE
Araluen Park Cottages has been established on part of a rural property previously used for the grazing of cattle. The concept of more sustainable land use and restoration of native habitat led to the development of four individual environmentally friendly cottages in a natural setting with a long-term plan for native vegetation restoration of the remnant vegetation surrounding the cottages.
Integral to the cottage design were key elements of sustainability including off-grid solar power, waste water management systems, domestic potable water collection and waste recycling.
Construction of the cottages according to energy efficient principles included building orientation, use of energy efficient materials, insulation, and the use of some recycled materials. Incorporation of restored vintage and antique items of furniture are common throughout the cottages. The lead-lighting throughout the cottages includes the use of re-cycled glass.
Revegetation of the native vegetation around the cottages and in the gullies below the cottages is ongoing and the improved habitat has seen an increase in the native flora and fauna in the area. An area of 26ha has been preserved in perpetuity for nature conservation under a Trust for Nature conservation covenant across the property. Management of this area occurs in accordance with a prescriptive Management Plan. Small pockets of warm temperate rainforest occur in the gully below the cottages.
Approximately 120 bird species have been observed on the property, including some significant species such as White-bellied Sea-eagles and Powerful and Sooty Owls.
Wombats, wallabies, possums and gliders are common throughout the property.
